Except for perhaps the Raspberry Pi or Arduino, few products are as capable of going from zero to hero with a little DIY ingenuity than IKEA furniture  otherwise known as IKEA Hacks.

At its core, an IKEA hack is a modification or repurposing of an IKEA product that breaks into the IKEA code of furniture assembly. To date, users have created everything fromroom dividers out of coat hangerstomulti-monitor workstations from closet doors. Now, users will soon be able to build their own large format 3D printers using just two$9.99 LACK side tablesthanks to this ingenious hack from Northampton-based 3D printing enthusiast Wayne Mason-Drust.

This project is just the beginning for a (more polished) cheap large format printer,he explains.The build volume is 34 L X 31 W X 30 H CM. You would be surprised how sturdy this machine is and yet lightweight.In comparison, MakerBots $6,500Replicator Z18large format 3D printers build volume measures in at 30 L X 30.5 W X 45.7 H CM.

As for the 3D printer components themselves, Wayne is using anE3D V6 Titan Extruderwith anMKS SBase controllerand anMKS TFTusingSmoothieware. Currently, the printer is just a prototype for what will end up being an even larger printer with the addition of extension pieces to increase the height of the Z axis, a heat bed and an enclosure.

From here, Wayne plans on modifying the kit to adapt to other tables in theIKEA LACK lineupwith an Instructables write-up currently in the works.

The BP475 Large Format Desktop 3D Printer Made With Carbon Fiber

Some 3D printers can print in carbon fiber, but this 3D printer is made from carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber is an increasingly popular material in the 3D print world, due to its low weight and high strength. Multiple 3D printers now have the capability of 3D printing objects using carbon fiber-infused filaments.

However, this machine is made from carbon fiber, at least partially. The Filament Innovations BP475 is a larger format unit thats sold as a kit for onsite assembly – and it carries a very good price.

According to founder Mike Gorski, the origin of this machine was based on the need to make something better:

About three ago, I set out to build a large scale 3D Printer based on open-source technology, premium components, and one that was affordable for everyone to have. After tons of trial and error, I finally created what is now called the BFP475. The BPF475 has a 475x425x700mm build area and comes standard with Carbon Fiber parts.

And thats what you get: a 3D printer that includes a number of carbon fiber parts. In particular, the machine includes a 5mm thick solid carbon fiber print plate, as well as a number of other critical components.

Carbon fiber provides highly rigid and durable components that should make printing more reliable. As well, the weight of the machine is slightly less, although the majority of the machines weight will be the frame, which is standard aluminum extrusions. Nevertheless, achieving the same plate rigidity using regular metal would be quite a bit heavier.

Aside from the carbon fiber, the BP475 has some very interesting features, most notably its huge build volume, at 475 x 425 x 700mm. Thats gigantic, as far as desktop 3D printers go. Other features include:

There is an optional heated print surface, which I would recommend for such large prints, or you can opt for a PRINTinZ print surface, which Ivefound very useful.

But perhaps the most interesting feature of the BP475 is its price: only USD$2,999. That is a spectacularly low price for a machine of this size and features. Consider this: 3D prints on this volume are exceeded only by the 3D Platform and BigRep-style machines, all of which cost in excess of USD$20K.

Gorski also informs us that theyre experimenting with an acrylic version of the kit that would reduce the pricing even further to perhaps USD$1,999. However, I think Id prefer that carbon fiber print bed.

Materials printable on this machine would, at least at large object sizes, be constrained to PLA due to the open format of the machine. Ambient air will no doubt cool prints and make it overly challenging to 3D print warpy materials such as ABS.

However, smaller items can be printed in a much wider variety of materials as the hotend is capable of hitting 300C, making it possible to 3D print ABS, Nylong, PETG, TPU and other more exotic materials.

From what I understand, the company produces kits in batches and once sold, there is a four week waiting period while they organize the next batch.

This item is a kit, and you must assemble it yourself. However, Filament Innovations has taken the effort to minimize the work required. Gorski explains:

There has been absolutely no compromise to quality when it comes to this printer. The printer does ship as a kit, but all the major components are pre-assembled. The end user just needs to put a few key bolts in to connect the main assemblies together, plug the wiring into the MKS Gen 1.4 Board (harnesses are pre-made), and the user is good to go.

Filament Innovations, as their name implies, also sells filament, but theres a difference: they produce large-format spools specifically to address the needs of the hungry BP475, which, due to its size, can print for very long periods. Its for those long prints that large spools can reduce or eliminate the need for mid-print spool swapping.

If youre seeking a very low cost, large-format desktop 3D printer that is reliable, the B475 is something you should check out.

KENDLE launches new K2 large-format SLA 3D printer on Kickstarter for as low as $1,250

KENDLE, a hardware startup based out of Hong Kong, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its new KENDLE K2 large-format SLA 3D printer.

The new 3D printer boasts a build volume of 190 x 120 x 220 mm (comparatively larger than the popular Form 2 SLA 3D printer) and reportedly offers users a high printing speed of up to 5 seconds per layer (with its proprietary KENDLE Resin materials). This speed, says the startup, is up to 20 times faster than standard desktop FDM 3D printing rates.

In terms of quality, KENDLE claims its crowdfunded stereolithography 3D printer has layer height of between 10 and 500 microns, and an X/Y resolution of 75 microns. Additionally, the 3D printers constructionwhich consists of a metal chassis, industrial joints, Hiwin KK linear guideways, and a Quadro fan systemreportedly ensures stable and reliable 3D printing quality.

Other features of the new 3D printer include an external control screen; WIFi, USB or Ethernet connectivity; a removable resin slot; and a colorful cover made of a UV protected material. In fact, users can choose between five different color options for their 3D printer enclosure: blue, green, teal, orange, or yellow.

Currently, the KENDLE K2 Kickstarter campaign has raised about half its goal of $25,564 and has just under a month to raise the rest. Interested backers can still take advantage of some Early Bird rewards, with the SLA 3D printer going for as low as $1,253 (HK$ 9,800). The standard Kickstarter price for the 3D printer is slightly higher at $1,349 (which is still substantially less than its retail price of $2,099).

These backer rewards come with the 3D printer as well as 800 g of KENDLEs dedicated white 3D printing resin. There is also a $153 reward option which consists of five 1 kg spools of normal resin, which come in white, grey, black, or transparent C.

Transparent C is KENDLEs regular grade clear resin, which can reportedly have slight discolorations once it is printed. The startup has also developed what it calls Transparent S resin, which is described as a crystal clear resin with no color distortion. Its not clear when this higher grade of clear resin will be available to backers, though KENDLE promises more details are to come shortly.

If youre like most savvy makers, you will likely have a healthy amount of skepticism about the new 3D printeras one should with crowdfunded technology, I think. Notably, KENDLE is not shying away from this skepticism and is hoping to do right by its backers by offering a daily update about the 3D printers progress. It also says it will release three to five 3D printer time lapses per week.

2017-05-27I was in the market for a printer with a large build area for printing models that would not fit on my Prusa. Most printers with the build area I required cost over $3,000 which was more than I was willing to pay. I started to search the Internet for the parts I would need to build one myself when I came across this printer for a very affordable price. After searching for reviews and not finding many because it was a new product I contacted the manufacturer who was very helpful and even made a video for me to see the product in action. I purchased the printer and once I received it setup was as simple as connecting two pieces and plugging in the wires. The printer comes with a single extruder setup and a double extruder setup which was used to test the printer before shipping. The hotend is very close to an E3D V6 and will accept V6 nozzles. The print heads are also magnetic which is one of my favorite features apart from the touch screen. It takes seconds to go from a single extruder to double. I just ordered an additional single extruder so I wont have to change nozzle sizes as much. The print bed is huge, I believe 15.7in x 15.7in and prints adhere to it almost too well. I purchased kapton tape to make it easier to remove the prints. I believe there is a silicon heater pad on the bottom of the bed which heats to 70C in minutes, unfortunately the heat is mostly centered and the edges dont heat as high which hasnt been an issue for me. The touch screen is very well thought out and simple to navigate. It can be used to auto level the bed, tune prints, preheat, move axis, home and much more. The stepper motors seem to be high torque and the over all construction of the printer is Aluminum making it extremely rigid and helping with precision. Ive done extremely complex bevel gears and other parts that require accuracy to function and the printer did a very good job. Depending on the settings you almost cant tell they were printed. I really like the Xinkebot Orca 2+ , I simply love the easy to operate touch screen and high-quality prints. It is a fast machine and I can print big artefacts with as well. This machine is priced very low compared to the specifications it provides. Actually, the dual extruder is really cool. I am new to 3D printing, I am a small time artefact designer and this seemed like a perfect choice. Go for it, with your eyes shut!

Large Format 3D Printing + Filabot

One of the reasons many of our customers choose to extrude their own filament is economy, and as more large format 3D printers hit the market – the math is particularly compelling.

Can The Beast be used as a single head printer?

Yes. If you wish to take advantage of a larger print area at the expense of additional print heads, The Beast can easily be configured this way.

Can The Beast print in 4 colours on the one print?

The Beast can print with up to 3 colours / materials on the one print with a small change to the firmware and wiring. Contact us this if you want to achieve this AFTER you have built your printer. One of our staff will provide instructions.

Can I order The Beast in a custom size?

Not at this stage, however we are working on a number of new size options as we speak.

Out of the box, The Beast takes any generic 1.75mm filament. We recommend 1.75mm PLA. The E3D extruder is more flexible as it supports different types of filament which require higher heat to melt.

Yes and no. We have come up with a heat bed solution which you can build yourself on ourforum. We do not currently have a commercial product, however we are working on it.

check wiring, make sure all extensions are secure and wires secures to electronics board properly.

Filament may be caught prior to hotend

Remove bowden tube from pushfit adapter, push filament through and check it is going all the way into hotend

Filament may have heated in the neck of the heaterblock, usually due to gaps in the construction of the hotend and insufficient cooling of neck of hotend. Check fans are working

Check Hobbed Gear grub screw is tightened onto flat of motor shaft

remove all filament from Bowden Tube, trim and replace

Adjust trimpot on stepper driver – clockwise to increase

Extruder motor too hot / current too high

Check for blockages and descrease current on stepper driver.

Check fan ontop of extruder is working

Increase power to extruders by rotating stepper driver trimpot clockwise 1/4 turn

Pre-heat hotends, remove filament from line, ensure filament moves easilly through bowden tube with little resistance. Check condition of filament, are there bends and kinks? Also check bowden tubes are running in a smooth arc from the extruder to the hotend. Bends in the bowden tube increase friction.

Check you have not confused wires between extruder motors, extruder 1 and 2 should be wired together and 3 and 4. If wired incorrectly, low torque will be evident on each extruder, extruders may spin unexpectedly or jog forward and back

Decrease stated nozzle size in software ie if using .5, reduce to .4 or .35

Increase hotend temperature by 10 degrees

Check Heater Cartidge with multimeter. Is circuit open? Replace cartridge

Check no short in thermister wires prior to thermister.

Follow and check all connectioned wires down to electronics.

Vertical walls skewed on printed parts

Secure bed with wedges to prevent movement – do not clamp bed – it will warp.

Motors skipping steps – motor too hot

Motor should be warm, not hot. If so, reduce current with trimpots on stepper drivers

Reduce filament flow by 10% and retry print

If on first few layers, slow down print by 20% and retry

Use 16 x microstepping instead of 32x (should be 16x if instructions were followed)

Top and bottom surface contains small particles of filament (hashed up) on one printhead but not others

Check Hobbed gear is aligned to the center of the filament

Wrong thermister monitoring wrong hotend. Test wiring with multimeter or heat suspect hotend and watch if another hotend increases in temperature.
